I chose to tackle my fear of food, formally known as Cibophobia, through two of my favorite mediums—silkscreen and sewing—in my thesis. My obsession with germs, arcades, and my Aunt Chrissy’s desire for me to make clothing with virus imagery inspired me to make my own plush toys that could be won from a claw machine, but with a twist—they would be foods covered in virus patterns. For the plushies, I sourced and screen printed food viruses onto fabric which I then, using sewing patterns, cut out the pieces to sew each respective food together. To accompany the plush foods, I screen printed diseased fruits and veggies on the reusable bags as a kind of interesting comparison to what we normally see on market reusable bags. I focused on a five color palette that transformed into a gradient used throughout the BF+BG expo and online experience.
